subject:olympic thoughts
time:5:26 p
mood: thoughtful
i like the olympics, i guess it's the feelgood factor. i'm an idealist. i want the best athletes to win, regardless of which country they represent. i do wish politics could be left out of the games but i know it can't truly ever be like that, shame.

enjoyed watching the entry of the flag bearers and athletes during the opening ceremonies. i love flags. i'm such a nerd like that, flags and coins and stamps and heraldry. (thank you in advance, [info]jonnytuna, for bringing me some coins from beijing!)

loved the red dresses worn by the chinese ladies leading the flag bearers.

thought the symbolic release of doves was cool. dismayed to hear they gave up the idea of using real doves because several got flambeed whilst sitting on the rim of the torch cauldron in a practice run.

the little boy who walked alongside the chinese flag bearer, it made me tear up to hear how he sang to his classmates to keep their spirits up when they were trapped in a collapsed building during the may earthquake. *sniff* got goosebumps watching the lighting of the huge olympic torch and the gorgeous fireworks display. i love pageantry. i'm such a sap. *sniff and double sniff*

my internet has gone down the last 4 days in a row. so very annoying!

another annoying event was gigi getting a hold of a 'beanbag' type pillow, filled with thousands of TINY styrofoam beads. what a pain that was to clean. gah.

i just opened a punnet of cherries that had been in the fridge for 3 days and there was a LIVE sp*der in them! sadly, the cherries have gone in the bin, the thought of them having been in such close contact with a creepy crawly was too much for me to stomach (literally!). *shudder*

(sp*ders are pretty much my only fear. i won't even say the word, instead i say "s," incy, or creepy crawly.)

subject:dog names
time:1:43 p
mood: giggly
having finished the first six weeks of obedience training, gigi and i started the second set of classes yesterday. it was all different dogs from before which is nice as it means meeting new owners/dogs. but some of the names! one puppy is named licky and one is named hugs (different owners, btw). i joked that i'm going to change gigi's name to kisses so she fits in.

after the training course we went to the park and met more owners/dogs. in particular a man with two dogs, a male and a female. the female is called merkin (which always makes me chuckle) but she had no interest in playing with gigi, but the male and gigi played quite well together. turns out his name is faeces! i kept yelling, "gigi, go play with faeces!" NOT something i ever imagined i'd be saying! :Op

subject:weather and tv rant
time:3:09 p
mood: bitchy
what is it with the weather lately? is it not july? is it not summer? have we somehow been transported back in time to winter a la doctor who?!

speaking of doctor who, i'm very sad to say i was let down by the season finale. i won't put any spoilers in here except to say it was too much of a happy ending for my taste. the second to last episode was much better. i'll miss it for a whole year, though, as there is very little else on the telly worth watching. certainly NOT bonekickers. i had been looking forward to it as it's about history and archaeology and solving mysteries, but, jeesh! it was pants with a capitol PAH! unbelievable plot, complete overacting, and great liberties with science and history. no thanks. one good thing television wise is the flat FINALLY got wired for cable so at least able to watch the soup - hooray for joel mchale!

subject:fourth of july
time:1:53 p
mood: pensive
happy fourth of july to those celebrating today. i might even manage to get out of the house this weekend in honour of it. funny thing, though - mark works at the british hq of a large american company. every fourth of july the company throws a big catered party with an open bar to celebrate american independence, no taxation w/o representation, down with the oppressors, death to the british, etc. ... uh, hello?! they ARE the british! *snicker*

in other news, though, sad stuff. mark's mother has to have her dog put down today. max is 10 and although cocker spaniels can live to 14, he has a bad heart (apparently was born with a heart condition which wasn't diagnosed until he became poorly.). he's the third dog in 6 weeks i know of that has had to be put down. so sad. so, if i do any celebrating this weekend it will be partially to honour BUBBLES, FENRIS, and MAX, and all the people they shared their lives with.

*off to hug gigi tightly*

subject:new furniture!
time:3:22 p
mood: chipper
i've been watching the lots at a local auction house for months and finally now have some furniture in my room, hooray!

   vanity    dresser

i would call them a vanity (or dressing table) and a dresser but i guess those are american english terms as the auction listed them as "a dressing chest above drawers" and "a fitted chest of drawers." whatever...

the room is now kind of full, but the trade off is worth it as to be able to put things away in drawers is fantastic, everything has been stored either in carrier bags or boxes on the floor, ugh. a coffee table for the lounge and the flat will be set. i guess it's true that the little things in life really matter most. *g*

time:5:53 a
mood: awake
bit of a long shot, i realise, but does anyone want to see cyndi lauper at shepards bush in october? tickets go on sale 9:30 a.m. (friday). ticket are about £40 depending on vendor.

also, anyone fancy seeing jonathan davis (of korn) monday at the union chapel in islington? those tickets are about £30.

is it any wonder i'm always running out of money with gig tickets so expensive! *sheesh*

... the worst thing about owning a dog would be picking up poop. no, the worst thing about owning a dog is having to stand out in the rain waiting for them to select a spot to poop so you can then pick it up. *sheesh*

just spent the last hour locked out of my apartment. the postman rang to deliver a package so i left the apartment door ajar while i went to the building front door, but a gust of wind blew my apartment door shut. i was stuck out there with no phone, no purse, no shoes, nada. luckily i was inside the building as it was raining. thankfully a neighbour let me use their phone to ring mark at work, he sent his keys 'round in a taxi. amazingly, gigi didn't bark the entire time i was out there, maybe she could tell i was right outside the door. normally she would be barking and howling her little head off.

am interested to see how this works out. i can't vote but if i could i think i'd have gone lib dem as i liked that candidates policies the best.

it's ironic that the us elections, in which i can vote, have played out so that i don't like any of the candidates yet i'll have to chose one of them. *le sigh*

our little [info]evilmandykins is leaving us tonight, boo hoo! so [info]bettebrown and i are meeting her at the 55 BAR in camden this evening to scheme up ways to keep her here (top suggestion so far: starting our own cult religion). the luscious 2 for 1 cocktails between 6-8 will help console us. PLEASE COME ALONG! :O)

tickets went on sale this morning for the raconteurs at the hammersmith apollo and promptly sold out, no surprise there. but i wasn't able to get any! waah! so if anyone knows any reputable ticket resellers, please do let me know.

eta: oooh, although i hate buying from them, i did find some tickets on ticketbastard. problem solved.

edited to further add: ACK! they're playing may 14th, the same day vanessa and katie arrive from the u.s.! so, more scrambling and 2 more tickets purchased (this time from way ahead tickets, cheaper than ticketbastard). the worry is now, whether or not vanessa and katie will be up to seeing them after their long flights (what am i saying, those girls are pros!) and if they even like the band in the first place!

that's it. i'm taking the dog for a walk then getting back under the covers and hiding from the world. it's all too much for me - i am a girl of little brain.

spent 45 mins in the park with gigi. it was so much fun! at first she was hopping in the snow like a bunny, i guess it was cold on her paws. but she got the hang of it pretty quick and was running and playing with other dogs. sadly it's all melted now but it was great fun while it lasted.
